Established Masters Still Command the Art Auction Market

By Prof. Gu Xiao Jin

Due to the unexpected sales growth in post-war and contemporary artworks, total value from New York auctions increased by 7% in the first half of 2013, indicating the up-trend in U.S. Impressionist and contemporary artworks accounted for one-third of the auctioned items. China, on the other hand, had seen a 14% decrease in sales, and U.K. market had contracted by 7% in the same period.
In the first half of 2013, the top 10 artists worldwide in terms of prices paid for their artworks are: Pablo Picasso ($226.1 Million), Chang Dai-Chien ($180.3 Million), Jean-Michel Basquiat ($169.2 Million), Qi BaiShi ($138 Million), Andy Warhol ($137.1 Million), Hans Richter ($123.1 Million), Claude Monet ($112 Million), Roy Lichtenstein ($101.5 Million), Amedeo Modigliani ($91.3 Million), and Jackson Pollock ($79.6 Million).
In the evening of June 18th, 2013, Christie’s London held an impressionist and contemporary artwork night auction. The total value reached US$140 Million. Sotheby’s London also had an impressionist and contemporary artwork night auction and the result was even more impressive: £160 Million (in British Pound). 98% of the scheduled items were auctioned off.
The enchantment of the art investment market is irresistible. The main reason is that great artworks are rare. Prices overall, annual average gains and long-term investment returns are all in upward trends.
