Developing Trend of the 2014 Art Market Author: Prof. Wang ShiHan Art assets’ prices will continue to rise into the future, as they have increased in recent years. As of the end of June 2013, there already were nine artworks that fetched at least $100 million RMB apiece in China’s auctions. The highest single-item auction price among them also set a new world record, reaching $436.8 million RMB. In the second half of 2013, one auction item broke the $1 billion RMB milestone. In the art market, middle-price-ranged artworks of great quality have nearly been depleted. Today, there are signs that superb, historic Chinese artworks that could demand $10 billion RMB are showing up overseas. The trend is so powerful it could break up the old pricing system. Moreover, many new capitalists are showing their faces in the Chinese art market, especially in the provinces of ShanDong, JiangSu and ZheJiang in the last couple of years. One of the reasons that artwork prices keep going up was that buyers are relentlessly pursuing quality masterpieces. Of course, capital is not the only key to the uplift of the market, quality professionals are also critical to the long-term development of the trend. Starting 2014, artworks shall become the most expensive personal belongings one can own, surpassing private jets, villas and ultra-luxurious automobiles. A sculpture or a painting may worth more than a skyscraper or a private jet. It is probably easier for rudimentary investors to understand the value of a real estate or a private jet than to comprehend how some colors on a canvas can be so expensive. But as a society matures, the appreciation for art grows following wealth growth, as witnessed throughout history. In the book of ShiJi (史記, meaning historic records), the biographies of Lian Puo (廉頗) and Lin XiangRu (藺相如) told a story of trading 15 cities for a piece of huge, flawless jade. Needless to say, the prerequisite for an artwork to demand a lofty price is that it is extremely rare and of exceptional quality and it cannot be re-produced. On the other hand, the range of prices for an artwork is also determined by the potential buyers’ wealth levels and knowledge levels of the target item. When a buyer knows more about an artwork’s connotation, historic significance and artistic value, he is more likely to offer a higher price to obtain it. |
