Qing Dynasty QienLong Era: HerTien Nephrite Maitreya Dimensions (cm): L 8.6 x W 6.1 x H 9.57cm Weight: 2,926 carats The sitting Maitreya statue was sculpted from a piece of HerTien white jade with exceptional purity and color. The body of the Buddha is full and smooth in appearance. His plumper face features long, slender and curved eye brows and a wide open smile. With a piece of cloth draped over his lower arms and around his back, the Buddha shows his bare chest and upper arms, holding prayer beads on the right hand and wearing ornaments on his neck. His facial expression is both gentle and stately. The right leg bends half way at the knee, and the left leg is raised so the left foot rests on the right thigh. The left arm extends along the left side of the torso all the way to the floor. The right hand is casually placed on the right thigh. Two little jade monkeys playfully chase each other over the Buddha’s body, adding much cuteness to this work of art. This whole-body Maitreya jade sculpture is one of the masterpieces that exemplify the finest works produced by the Imperial Workshop in the powerful and prosperous QienLong era of the Qing Dynasty. The sculptor was not only skillful and precise in his craftsmanship, he was also mindful of how to present the characteristics and best qualities of the piece of jade in his hands. He was truly a pioneer in bringing jade sculpting to a whole new level. Reference: 1. Chinese Treasures Lost Overseas, Jade Artworks, Vol. I, pp. 124-125. 2.
