QING QIANLONG CARVED FIVE DRAGON SEAL Weight: 40,500 carats "Xi", the imperial Jade seal of the rulers of China, its origin of supremacy can be traced back to the Qin Dynasty. Before the Qin Dynasty, "Xi" was frequently used by everyone as stamps. In 221 BC, King Ying Zheng conquered all seven Warring States and achieved complete dominance of China; he then granted himself the name Qin Shi Huangdi, which means "the First Emperor." He also mandated the seal as the ultimate authority symbol of the national government; therefore, common people couldn't use "Xi" anymore. On this solemn seal, five legendary dragons are fighting over a sacred orb. Hieroglyphic embossments of dragons are on four sides as well. The scene is actually depicting the war of throne between the successors. The glorious winner will become the great king of China and hold the imperial seal (the power) in his hands. |
